Rwanda’s three great wildlife experiences in one week
The route we recommend to most first-time visitors. Begin in Kigali, spend an hour with mountain gorillas in the Virungas, track chimpanzees in ancient Nyungwe, and finish on the savanna of Akagera looking for lions, rhinos and elephants.

Day 1 · Kigali
Arrival & city tour
Airport welcome, then an afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and Kimironko market.

Days 2–3 · Volcanoes
Gorilla trekking
Drive north to the Virungas. On day three, trek to a gorilla family; spend the afternoon at the cultural village or by the fire.

Chimpanzees & the canopy walk
Follow the Lake Kivu shore south to Nyungwe. Track chimpanzees at dawn and cross the canopy walkway.

How fit do I need to be?
Treks take 1–5 hours on steep, muddy slopes at 2,500–3,000 m. Rangers match groups to gorilla families by fitness, and porters ($15) can carry your bag and help on steep sections.
Is there a minimum age?
Gorilla trekking is open to visitors aged 15 and over. Younger travellers can join the golden monkey trek, the cultural village or a nature walk instead.
What should I pack?
Waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, a rain jacket, garden gloves for gripping vegetation, and a small daypack. We lend walking sticks at the park.
